[Web15] Michael Weber. Analysis of Bluetooth LE as a transmission standard in the field of eHealth. Master's thesis, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, December 2015. [ bib ]
Electronic Health (eHealth) applications like telemonitoring systems substantially reduce costs in the healthcare system, especially by dealing with diseases like heart failure or diabetes. With the Bluetooth Version 4.0 the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) implemented a possibility to transmit data with significantly lower power consumption than the classical Bluetooth connection. This enables wireless sensors with a battery lifetime of up to a year, which is an important feature for user-friendly solutions. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to provide support for the decision whether Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) is qualified to be used in the area of eHealth or not. Information from Bluetooth SIG and scientific papers related to health applications have been collected and summarized, as well as an Android Bluetooth LE scanner application has been developed. Additionally, parts of an existing commercial Android application was inspected, which receives data from a Bluetooth LE enabled blood pressure monitor. Bluetooth LE v4.2 offers protective measures against Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) and Passive Eavesdropping attacks as well as Privacy and Identity Tracking. Occasionally MitM attacks are possible when the I/O capabilities of the devices are too limited. Version 4.0 is supported by all the main operating systems, but using the current version 4.2 could lead to compatibility problems. The implementation of the standard in Android is associated with an extensive development effort, but the official documentation reduces it effectively. In conclusion, Bluetooth LE is a wireless communication standard promising for the future, whereby the current version is qualified for eHealth applications. On the other hand, the standard is still further developed which leads to interoperability problems and therefore maybe should not be used for commercial eHealth applications at the moment.

[Ber15] Daniel Bernold. Flexiblere Einsatzmöglichkeiten durch eine Industrie-SPS im Smart Home Bereich. Master's thesis, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, Department of Telecommunications and Internet Technologies, FH Technikum Wien, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
In recent years the deployment of building and home automation has become commonplace. Nowadays it is an essential part of electric installations to achieve energy efficiency and to improve the level of comfort for residents. Already existing systems such as BACnet, LonWorks and KNX offer a wide range of opportunities to make the daily life more comfortable and easier. Especially KNX, which can predominantly be found in Europe, offers a large range of devices for smart homes. One big disadvantage of KNX is the support of connectable components which is limited to devices with KNX interface and the intelligence of a bus device - devices without bus interface, for example conventional switches, cannot be integrated into a KNX system. This paper deals with the integration of a PLC into a KNX system. The PLC is implemented as central master of the system. By means of this extension it is possible to connect any devices with heterogeneous interfaces to the KNX system. The focus of this paper lies on the details of the communication between the KNX system and the PLC as well as the data transfer handling between the two systems. Furthermore the processing of the exchanged data is described.

[Ede15] Philip Eder. Environmental Context in Ambient Assisted Living. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Feb 2015. [ bib ]
Users are individual and have individual limits. With raising age these limits statistically increases and reduce the capabitlity for users to interact with some user interfaces de- pending on the limitations. Adaptive user interfaces are designed to adjust the chosen user interface depending on the users capability and environmental context. E.g. when a user is hard of hearing the volume of a text to speech user interface must be loud enough, but with a loud background noise the volume In this thesis the question of how to collect data from the environment and how to transmit it to an existing middle ware will be addressed. Therefor an overview of the state of the art in wireless protocol, single board com- puters and sensor technologies will be given. Wireless communication protocols IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee, Z-Wave, EnOcean Radio Protocol and Bluetooth low energy will be presented. Furthermore a selected range of single-board computers will be compared and several types of sensor nodes to capture environmental data will be described.

[Hau15b] Lukas Hauer. Indoor Ortung von Gegenständen mittels iBeacon. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Jan 2015. [ bib ]

[Hau15a] Lukas Hauer. Code Abgabetool. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
When lecturers want to correct the programming homework of their students in class, they have to dedicate large amount of class time for corrections. Because of this, a lot of time is lost which could be used for questions from their students or for discussing difficult steps in the programming language in more detail. If there would be more time for discussing such steps with students, who are learning a programming language for the first time, they would get more support and their motivation might improve. This paper tackles this problem by introducing a opportunity for lecturers to build their own code test system environment, allowing their students to upload their homework to this automatic test system. In this paper, the system environment and the used technology, like Apache, for the webserver, and programming languages like Python or Java are described. Also requirements and processes for students and lectors are explained in more detail. At the end of the paper, two other important points are addressed: The possible ways for an extension of the test to new homework and the editing of already existing tests. In these two text-sections the lecturer's steps will be- outlined, demonstrating, how much work one will have, if one wants to adopt an existing exercise into the new system.

[Kid15b] Roland Kidritsch. Konstruktion von Rollladen & Jalousie für ein LEGO-Modellhaus. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Feb 2015. [ bib ]

[Kid15a] Roland Kidritsch. Development of a communication device from an inverter to the house automation system LOXONE. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
In the context of the author’s internship the task was given to enable the communication between an SMA™ inverter [1], an SMA battery management system and the home automation LOXONE™ [2]. The hardware itself had to be designed and constructed, in order to develop an effective and open system for the company, which can be used and modified also in the future from the company’s staff. The communication interface is an stm32F303VC micro controlller unit (MCU), which is able to communicate with an inverter, the battery management system and the home automation system via one or two RS485 interfaces [3]. The MCU is housed in a box with DIN rail adapter and periphery. There are two superimposed mounted printed circuit boards (PCB) are modules. On the basic module the periphery and the operating voltage supply circuit located. The periphery consists of two RS485 click modules and an Ethernet click module. The MCU is mounted on the second PCB with an additional manual reset button. The housing with DIN rail adapter serves the MCU in a control cabinet or fuse box to be mounted on a DIN rail. This allows that the LOXONE™ and devices from SMA™ do not use the same protocol. In the required protocol the MCU receives commands and passes on information. After completing this work, a self-made communication board was developed and provides the basis for subsequent individual programming. In this work, the focus lies on the hardware construction.

[Klu15a] Johannes Klug. Analyse zur KNX Implementierung fuer Flatout Technologies GmbH. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Jan 2015. [ bib ]

[Klu15b] Johannes Klug. Virtueller KNX Simulator. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
The automation of home and office systems like lighting, shading and air-conditioning is a steadily growing market. While multinational corporations are investing huge amounts of money in this sector, small startup companies and students are also trying to access the market. Unfortunately, the required hardware can be a huge financial obstacle for smaller companies and especially students so they have to accept a risk of several thousand euros alone for the hardware. A simulator could lower financial barriers and allows the implementation of low budget solutions in this area. However, in the case of the KNX home automation standard, software applications that are capable of simulating such systems are currently not available. This paper proposes an architecture for a KNX simulator system, which processes incoming KNXnet/IP packets, generates correct output on the network and shows the results in a graphical user interface. The basic behavior of a KNX system is analyzed in terms of the input and output to the network interface. Additionally, the basis for a thermal simulation to support heating and air conditioning is developed. The result of the analysis is a modular software architecture, which allows the user to create a virtual KNX system with freely configurable devices and the ability to write GUI extensions, network connectors and new device types. The prototype implementation that was created during the study already supports network connectivity, a GUI based on JavaFX, and is capable of processing switching and dimming events.

[Med15] Michael Mederitsch. Computer-Vision und Object-Tracking auf mobilen Roboterplattformen. Master's thesis, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
The average age in our modern society has increased significantly during the last decades. Current studies show that this trend will continue in the future. Therefore, more and more people need help during their daily life. One possible solution for this problem is the use of ambient assistive technologies (AAL). Particularly service robots can increase the life quality and the independency of seniors and handicapped people by helping them with their daily activities. To accomplish these tasks, a robot needs one or more ways to sense its environment. Since humans perceive their environment visually, it seems natural to equip mobile robots with visual sensors. However, a big disadvantage of visual object recognition is the need for a lot of computational performance and memory. Unfortunately, embedded systems like mobile service robots only have very limited resources. This thesis deals with the implementation of an object detection system for mobile service robots. Since the selection of the detection algorithm is essential for the computational cost and the detection quality of the object detector, different CPU and GPU implementations of the algorithms are compared and evaluated for the use on embedded systems. Comparison parameters are the computation time, used memory and the quality of the detection. Finally, the results and possible future enhancements are discussed.

[Nir15] Martin Nirtl. Modular Middleware Platform for Embedded AAL Applications. Master's thesis, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, Nov 2015. [ bib ]
Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) enables elderly and handicapped people to live an autonomous and self-determined life by offering support for daily activities. At that point, AAL middleware platforms play a central role, while these are responsible for the integration of various sensors and actuators and for the provisioning of additional services (e.g. reminder) which support situation-dependent and subtle. The focus of this work lies on an AAL middleware platform. The functional range is thereby described by requirements, which have been derived from the ViTAL project. Especially the integration of assistive robotics constitutes an innovation among existing AAL middleware platforms. Consequently, existing AAL middleware platforms as well as requirements find their application in the development of a platform-independent architecture, which is split into hard- and software. This architecture enables the integration of various actuators and sensors from the sectors smart home, assistive robotics and e-health and also describes thereupon based services. In the following, the developed architecture is implemented in a prototype-like development. This implementation is based on an OSGi framework and hosts a web application for interaction with various integrated actuators and sensors from the already mentioned sectors. Last but not least, the prototype implementation is evaluated by the hand of previous stated requirements, where also its functionality is proven. Therefore, a test laboratory offers a KNX- system and an assistive robot, which both can be controlled by the web application hosted by the prototype. Finally, all results and potential improvements are discussed. Moreover, an outlook on future work is given.

[Obe15] Markus Oberhauser. KNX Anbindung an ein LEGO Smart Home. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
More and more technology companies are offering smart home implementations like control of the heating system, blinds or a robotic vacuum cleaner. The benefit is an immersive control via web or smart-phone applications, thus transitioning us out of the age in which tedious things need to be done. To achieve a real smart home several technologies have to communicate over communication protocols and the implementation of these technologies requires lot of planning due to their complexity. This bachelor thesis describes a project in which a modelled house made of LegoTM implements the KNXTM communication technology via bus interface modules (BIMs) and via KNXnet/IP with an EIBD library. Furthermore, the smart home parts in the LegoTM house are controlled via a web interface and smartphone applications of OpenHAB with a KNX binding. The project illustrates the complex interaction between devices to achieve a functional modelled smart home.

[Ott15] Matthias Otto. Implementation and Integration of Local and Global Planning Algorithms into the ROS Framework and Analysis of Local and Global Planning Algorithms. Master's thesis, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
In last few years assistive wheelchairs or autonomous robots have become more important. This work deals with an autonomous indoor navigation system for a wheelchair, especially with local path planning. In particular, it is concerned with the different types of trajectories. For this wheelchair, a type with high driving comfort is required. Achieving this objective involves the usage of a clothoid as trajectory. In the course of this work, three different types of clothoids will be explained and discussed. For the high-level navigation, a modified Dijkstra algorithm is used. Further, the implemented system will be compared to the internal navigation system of the ROS framework. Thereby, the focus of the analysis is to show the impacts of the global planning on the local planning. Additionally, situations are shown, where the wheelchair could not move on without threatening the patient. The analysis furthermore focuses on the speed, the dynamic behaviour as well as the time taken for reaching the target. Based on this knowledge a conclusion about the driving comfort can be made.

[Plo15] Horst Plochberger. Computer-Vision und Object-Tracking auf mobilen Roboterplattformen. Master's thesis, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
In the last few years, depth cameras like the Microsoft Kinect or the ASUS Xtion PRO have become affordable to the public. These led to a great development in the 3D vision area, and further, an increase in efficient and freely available 3D image processing and object recognition algorithms. An example is the Point Cloud Library (PCL), which provides, similar to its 2D counterpart OpenCV, a powerful tool available as Open Source software. Furthermore, 3D object databases such as Trimbles (formerly Google) 3D Warehouse have appeared, which contain a huge range of 3D object models, filled by the community. Training objects to a vision system is a sophisticated and tedious task. Integrating a powerful and efficient searchable 3D database would have a tremendous benefit to an object recognition system. Whereas a lot of other works in this area focus in detail on a specific recognition method, this work will show, in the theoretical part, an overview of 3D capture devices in the low-cost area, state-of-the-art and public available 3D recognition elements, and several (free) accessible 3D Object Databases. The second part introduces a consistent concept and a prototypical implementation of an object recognition pipeline integrating the outlined technologies. The major application field is the integration in a mobile robot with a gripper arm. While the reliability under various conditions is indefensible for full unsupervised operation, it will prove that the modular concept can be used as an acceptable basis for further development, already getting reasonable results in research conditions.

In order to illustrate how the communication system Profinet IO works, the participants inside a basic network will be explained and the system power-up procedure is going to be analysed. In addition, an overview on the different classification criteria of Profinet IO, including the Conformance Classes, the Real Time Classes and the Profinet Specifications, are going to be explicated. In conclusion, different companies which offer a Profinet IO device stack are listed and the products are compared to each other.

[Sto15a] Markus Stoeger. Design einer Alarmanlage, Wetterstation und Multimedia-Anlage für ein LEGO Modellhaus. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Feb 2015. [ bib ]

[Sto15b] Markus Stoeger. Energy monitoring in smart buildings. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Jun 2015. [ bib ]
This work describes the development of JEVis, a program for analyzing, processing and displaying energy-specific data. The development contains the implementation and testing of parts of the system, and the elimination of errors in the source code. In addition the improvement of the stability of the actual version is very important. Furthermore, this work focuses on the import of archived data. The sensor data of a building is written continuously into the database. The main task is to improve this tool with the developers and get the individual parts of the program working. To import the data, a subsystem called JEDataCollector is used. It can automatically read out data from multiple sources. To ensure the basic functions of the system, first a CSV file must be imported. The values of this file should then be available in JEVis and show first results of this expiration. The experiences and conclusions that result from the development of this tool should be used for future work and should serve the development team as a guide.

Another aim of this work is the processing of building-specific measurements and usage-specific data that are provided for different types of buildings in Germany and Austria. The data is stored unstructured in an Excel file, which means a suitable format or layout has to be found before processing. As soon as this requirement is met, this file has been read out by the data analysis tool KNIME, in order to process the values according to the conditions. Since the building parameters and the usage data do not match the same layout, a separate processing for this operation is necessary. The output depends on the date, the building type and the country. This selection is done by a form that interrogates on these parameters at the beginning of the activity to ascertain which table has to be processed. For further processing the entire data sets need to be structured uniformly, to ensure that all building parameters and usage data have their own structure. In addition, the country-specific holidays should be added in the table of the usage data. Finally, the results are written in a table in order to be available for other departments.

[Tun15] Leticia Vizán Tundidor. Connecting an Arduino UNO to KNX. Technical report, ArT-Lab@Research Group Embedded Systems, FH Technikum Wien, Feb 2015. [ bib ]
The scope of this project is to implement communications between a BIM 132 board (which supports KNX) and another microcontroller, which for this project was Arduino UNO. The final goal is to be able to dispatch data to Arduino UNO from a BIM board and vice versa. This data contained information about the value of the object communication (related to different measures as lights, temperature, humidity...).; which when changed resulted in a change of the corresponding value. Depending on the requirements, two protocols of communication can be used. One based on SPI communication or the other based on UART communication.
