Nov 28, 2011 - IEEE Section Austria

Peter Rössler from the Dept. of Embedded Systems was elected as the new Chair of the IEEE Section Austria at the general assembly on Nov. 24, 2011. Together with Margrit Gelautz (Vice Chair) from the Vienna University of Technology, Thilo Sauter (Treasurer) from the Austrian Academy of Sciences as well as Peter Palensky (Secretary) from the Austrian Institute of Technology they will manage the Austrian Section of the IEEE as the new Executive Commitee for the next three years.

Oct 1, 2011 - FMICS 2011

The paper by Th. Reinbacher, J. Brauer, M. Horauer, A. Steininger and St. Kowalewski, "Past Time LTL Runtime Verification for Microcontroller Binary Code" received a best paper award at the 16th International Workshop on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems (FMICS 2011). This award is annually given to the best software science paper presented at FMICS by the European Association of Software Science and Technology (EASST).

Sep 5, 2011 - IEEE/ASME MESA 2011

P. Rössler and M. Horauer organized the symposiums on "Design & Verification Tools for Embedded Systems" and "Embedded Infrastructure and Theory" at the 7th ASME/IEEE International Conference on Mechatronic and Embedded Systems and Applications MESA'11 in Washington, DC. The conference itself was organized under the umbrealla of the ASME IDETC/CIE conferences with roughly 1.200 attendees. Roughly 214 papers were initially registered at MESA'11; finally 132 papers were accepted after the review process. Despite the effects of hurricane Irene almost all papers were presented at the conference, although several had to be re-scheduled between the sessions.

From our department three papers were presented, in particular:

  • P. Roessler, R. Hoeller and M. Zauner, "A METHODOLOGY FOR REMOTE DEBUG, TEST AND MAINTENANCE BASED ON IEEE 1588", DETC2011-48957.
  • M. Kramer, R. Beneder, Ph. Brejcha and P. Balog, "Dedicated Infrastructure for Academic Courses Related to Embedded Systems Design Supporting Students in Distance Learning Programs", DETC2011-47843.
  • Th. Reinbacher, M. Horauer, J. Brauer, A. Steininger, T. Mueller and St. Kowalewski, "Hardware Support for Efficient Testing of Embedded Software", DETC2011-47139

All papers are available via the ASME Digital Library.

May 7, 2011 - S4D

Recently, Peter Rössler became a member of the S4D (System, Software, SoC and Silicon Debug Conference) program committee. The conference has evolved from several industry workshops organized by the Electronic Systems & Chips Design Initiative (ECSI) into the areas of debug and provides a forum for work and standardization efforts related to debug of electronic systems. The S4D program committee consists of representatives from academic institutions as well as prominent companies like ARM, Infineon, Intel, NXP or Wind River. In 2010 our department has presented the research activities of the Austrian Research Studio COORDES which deals with the prototype implementation of a new patent-registered solution for coordinated test, debugging and diagnosis in distributed embedded systems. The S4D 2011 conference will be held in Munich, Germany from October 5-6, 2011.

Mar 4, 2011 - WS4C

Martin Horauer serves as member and contributing author for the WS4C workshop at the Informatik 2011 conference organized by the German Gesellschaft für Informatik E.V..

Mar 1, 2011 - INVENT A CHIP/AT

INVENT A CHIP/AT is the name of a new competition where pupils from upper schools in Austria (AHS, HTL) are invited to submit innovative ideas in order to build their own microchip with assistance from experts in the area of microelectronics. In Februar 2011 the submissions were reviewed by a jury of experts. The jury is composed of representatives from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT), local semiconductor companies as well as Austrian universities. The University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien is represented in the jury by Peter Rössler from the Department of Embedded Systems. The winning projects are, for example, a new concept for a garden sprinkler system which is controlled by area forecasts or a microchip for a smart desk light where the light intensity is adjusted to the ambient light in order to save energy. So, who knows? Maybe we can welcome some of the young inventors soon at our department where they can study the secrets of chip design in order to become a "real master" in the area of embedded electronic devices!

Jan 17, 2011 - CENICS 2011

CENICS 2011: Martin Horauer was once more invited to serve as a member of "The Fourth International Conference on Advances in Circuits, Electronics and Micro-electronics" CENICS 2011 that will take place August 21-27, 2011 - French Riviera, Nice/Saint Laurent du Var, France.
